Celebrating the 8th Anniversary of Sambor Prei Kuk’s Inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List (July 8, 2017 – July 8, 2025)
On July 8, 2017, Sambor Prei Kuk Temple Zone was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 41st session of the World Heritage Committee, held in Kraków, Poland. This recognition marked a significant milestone for Cambodia, as Sambor Prei Kuk became one of the nation's most treasured cultural and historical landmarks acknowledged on a global scale. The site, located in Kampong Thom province, is an outstanding example of early Khmer architecture, dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries during the Chenla Kingdom. Its unique octagonal towers, intricate carvings, and ancient temples reflect the profound spiritual and artistic achievements of early Khmer civilization.
The inclusion of Sambor Prei Kuk in the World Heritage List underscores the importance of preserving and promoting Cambodia’s cultural heritage for future generations. Over the past eight years, efforts have been made to enhance the conservation of the site, improve infrastructure, and raise awareness both locally and internationally about its historical significance. As we commemorate this 8th anniversary, it is a time to reflect on the achievements in heritage preservation and to reaffirm the commitment to safeguarding this invaluable legacy for the world to appreciate and admire.
