Prasat Kravan: The Distinctive Brick Temple of Angkor

Prasat Kravan, a unique and often overlooked temple within the Angkor Archaeological Park, stands out for its distinctive construction and artistic charm. Built-in the 10th century during the reign of King Harshavarman I, this temple offers a different perspective on the architectural diversity of the Khmer Empire.

Unlike the more common sandstone temples in the region, Prasat Kravan is constructed primarily of brick, with bas-reliefs carved directly into the brick walls — a rare feature in Khmer temple architecture. The temple was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, and its five towers are aligned in a north-south direction.

The central tower is the largest and contains the most intricate carvings, including depictions of Vishnu reclining, standing, and riding his mount, Garuda. These well-preserved carvings are not only significant for their artistic value but also provide insights into the religious practices and iconography of the era.
