Step into a world where the rhythms of life follow the rise and fall of the water—Kampong Phluk, one of the most authentic and captivating floating villages on the Tonlé Sap Lake, offers visitors a unique window into Cambodia’s traditional way of life.
Located just an hour’s drive and short boat ride from Siem Reap, Kampong Phluk is a peaceful community built on towering stilts, surrounded by lush mangrove forests and vibrant waterways. It’s the perfect destination for travelers seeking real connection with local culture and nature, far from the tourist crowds.
Life on Stilts: A Village Shaped by the Seasons
Kampong Phluk’s stilt houses rise an astonishing 6–10 meters above the ground, adapting to the lake’s dramatic seasonal changes. During the rainy season (June to October), the village becomes a floating town, where boats replace motorbikes, and life flows on water. In the dry season, the stilts are fully exposed, revealing how the community has lived in harmony with nature for generations.
With around 3,000 residents, most families in Kampong Phluk rely on fishing and small-scale farming. The village is home to schools, temples, and even a small pagoda—all perched above the shifting waters.
Explore the Magical Mangroves
One of Kampong Phluk’s highlights is the nearby flooded mangrove forest, which you can explore by small paddle boat. This serene journey takes you through shaded water channels lined with ancient trees, where birds call from above and the water sparkles beneath you. The mangroves not only support biodiversity, but also protect the village from storms and erosion—an example of how nature and community support each other.
